Des Moines - Take 2

We spent today back in town and started the day off with a visit to the Farmer's Market.  For the past two days, we have been wondering where all the people are and today they all came out!  The market spans 4 blocks East to West and 2 blocks North to South and fortunately for us was right outside our hotel.

We had a Take 2 on rental car as well.  Yesterday the "change oil" light came on so after an hour and a half waiting at the airport, we have a new ride.  They've promised me the oil was just changed so we should be good for the rest of our journey.

After a quick lunch, we headed to the Salisbury HouseThe House was built in the 1920s by cosmetics magnate Carl Weeks and his wife Edith and is modeled after the King's House in Salisbury, England.  Building started in 1923 and was completed in 1928.  The intial construction quote was $150,000 but by the time all was said and done, the bill came in at $3 million (equivalent of $40 million today).

Once the heat of the day passed, we took a walk through the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Over 20 sculptures are spread over the four acres in the middle of town. We were not expecting to see so much attention to the arts in Des Moines but have been pleasantly surprised as all throughout town there are sculptures, theatres and live music.

Tomorrow we say goodbye to Des Moines and head to Omaha.

  1. Fabulous pictures! It sure looked like you two are having a fun time. Wish we had that Farmer's market where we live.
