A Hot Day in Omaha

Since today’s forecast called for a high of 95, we thought we’d go by the Visitor Center to find out a few things to do…preferably indoors.
Unfortunately, the Visitor Center is closed on Monday so we walked around the Old Market a little.  We popped into an ice cream shop for a little treat and to escape the heat.  The lady behind the counter told us about Lauritzen Gardens…until she mentioned they had a tram, we weren’t really excited but then she had us at tram. They say it’s a dry heat but it was just plain hot so riding the tram was the way to go.

Daddy’s favorite sandwich was a reuben and as it turns out, the reuben was invented right here in Omaha at The Blackstone Hotel in 1920.  When we heard the best reuben in town is served at Crescent Moon Ale House across The Blackstone (now The Cottonwood), we knew that’s where we were headed for lunch. The server said the sandwiches were pretty big so we decided to split one.  I will say it was quite good and Daddy would have definitely approved.

Legend has it that Reuben Kulakofsky and some friends had a weekly poker game at The Blackstone from 1920 to 1935.  Reuben asked for his usual corned beef and sauerkraut sandwich but wanted something a little different.  The chef put the sandwich on rye and added thousand island dressing and thus the reuben was born.

As we are delicate petals and the heat got to us, we decided to head back to the hotel to relax and give Moma a chance to watch Schitt’s Creek so she could get the reference in yesterday’s post.
